Kathryn has been teaching architecture and involved in research at the University of Illinois since joining the faculty in 1984.

Her courses focus on:

  • how people relate to their housing environments
  • gender and racial issues in architecture
  • how to apply environment-behavior research to design

Her courses stress the importance of:

  • people and social and psychological issues to students in environmental design and
  • places and spaces and environmental issues to students in the social sciences.
She seeks to develop more socially responsible designers and more environmentally responsible social scientists.

Research interests include:

  • environment and behavior, with a special emphasis on housing (particularly the housing needs of special user groups including single-parent families, persons with physical challenges, etc.)
  • transforming architectural practice into a more humane environment, especially for those underrepresented in the profession, with a special emphasis on designing for diversity
  • transforming architectural education into a more humane environment for students and faculty, with a special emphasis on design juries and design education

She is the author of:

  • Design Juries on Trial: The Renaissance of the Design Studio (NY: Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1991, soon to be re-published), a book which unravels some of the mysteries of design education. It provides a guide for students to master the design jury and design studio both in school and in practice. It involves surveys, interviews, observations, and diaries of over 900 participants: students, faculty, and practitioners. Among those interviewed were 30 award-winning designers, including Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, E. Fay Jones, Cesar Pelli, Cynthia Weese, and others. If you would like to receive information on how to order Design Juries on Trial when it is re-published, please send e-mail to Kathryn Anthony at  kanthony@uiuc.edu.
