Tornado Damage-Manual to Illustrate Detail, Connections, and Anchorages in Residences

The City of Urbana and the BRC, with funding from FEMA and IEMA, have developed a program aimed at promoting enhanced wind storm damage resistance for local home construction. This is in response to the April 1996 tornado which did considerable damage to the town.

The project uses the booklet Windstorm Mitigation Manual for Light Frame Construction, prepared by David Wickersheimer of the Building Research Council under FEMA sponsorship. For a copy of the manual, put your request in writing and send to:

The illustrations below show ways to strengthen buildings by adding various metal connectors to places where buildings fail under extreme wind conditions.
