Tornado Damage-Manual to Illustrate Detail, Connections, and Anchorages in ResidencesThe City of Urbana and the BRC, with funding from FEMA and IEMA, have developed a program aimed at promoting enhanced wind storm damage resistance for local home construction. This is in response to the April 1996 tornado which did considerable damage to the town. The project uses the booklet Windstorm Mitigation Manual for Light Frame Construction, prepared by David Wickersheimer of the Building Research Council under FEMA sponsorship. For a copy of the manual, put your request in writing and send to: Illinois Emergency Management Agency
The illustrations below show ways to strengthen buildings
by adding various metal connectors to places where buildings fail under
extreme wind conditions.
